DICKENS, Charles [BROWNE, H.K.] : Dombey and Son. [Dealings With The Firm of Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail and For Exportation.] With Illustrations by H.K. Browne

London: Bradbury and Evans, October 1846 - April 1848.

FIRST EDITION. The complete 20 numbers in 19 parts, as issued, in their original blue/green decorative wraps. Light fraying and browning to edges; small but deep indent to the edge of over 25 pages, including 2 plates, of part V never affecting the text or the image; little repair to very few spines, some a bit rubbed. Covers and pages dog-eared. Foxing to plates as usual; most tissue guards present. Contained in 2 slipcases "en chemise", in contemporary green half morocco with gilt titles and marbled boards. Illustrated with 40 plates. The complete novel in original parts in generally remarkable condition. Unusual thus. The major novel 'Dombey and Son' weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. As with much of Dickens' writing it contains a number of socially significant themes, particularly the then-prevalent common practice of arranged marriages for financial gain or as a form of slavery, also child cruelty (specifically Dombey's treatment of Florence), familial relationships, Death (the villainous Carker meets a rather horrific end, also the loss of Paul Dombey 'threw a whole nation into mourning' - Forster) and as ever with Dickens, betrayal and deceit and the consequences thereof. Hatton and Cleaver. Eckel.
